Hollywood smile vs natural smile makeover
Two people can have the same number of veneers or crowns and end up with completely different smiles. The difference is in the shade, shape and detail you choose.
In a Hollywood smile vs natural smile makeover, the treatment can be the same, usually veneers or crowns on the teeth that show when you smile. The difference is the design. A Hollywood smile uses very white, uniform, symmetrical teeth for a bright, polished look. A natural smile makeover uses a shade that suits your skin and age, with slight variation in shape and translucency. A trial smile (mock-up) before treatment is the best way to avoid an over-white result.
When people compare a Hollywood smile vs natural smile makeover, they often think they are choosing between two different treatments. In most cases they are not. Both are usually made with porcelain veneers or crowns on the teeth that show when you smile. What separates a bright, film-star look from a smile that people simply think is yours on a good day is the design: the shade, the shape, the proportions and the small details. Those choices are yours to make, and they are much easier to make well before treatment than to change after.
This guide explains what the “Hollywood” label really means, the design choices that change the result, and how to avoid the most common regret we hear about: teeth that turned out whiter than the person wanted.
What people mean by a Hollywood smile
“Hollywood smile” is not a medical term. It is a popular name for a particular style of smile makeover, with:
- very white teeth, often at or near the brightest shades available
- even edges and a uniform length
- a symmetrical arrangement, the left side mirroring the right
- a full, broad smile showing many teeth
- a smooth, highly polished surface
Some people want exactly this, and it can look striking. It suits certain faces and personalities very well. Others ask for a Hollywood smile because it is the only name they have heard, when what they really want is straighter, lighter, healthier-looking teeth. That is closer to what we call a natural smile makeover. Our Hollywood smile page covers the treatment itself.
What a natural smile makeover looks like
A natural smile makeover uses the same materials but takes its cues from real teeth:
- a shade lighter than your current teeth, chosen to suit your skin tone, eye whites and age
- slight translucency at the biting edges, as natural enamel has
- small differences between teeth, with the central incisors a little longer and broader than the lateral incisors
- a gently curved smile line that follows the lower lip
- subtle surface texture rather than a mirror finish
The result is still a clear improvement. Gaps are closed, chips and old fillings are covered, length is restored and colour is lifted. The difference is that the eye does not go straight to the teeth as “new.”
The design choices that matter
Shade
Shade is the choice people most often regret, in both directions. Teeth that are too white can look flat and opaque, particularly against older or paler skin, and they can make any natural teeth or gum colour nearby look darker. Teeth that are not quite light enough can feel like a missed opportunity.
Some practical guidance:
- Look at the shade in daylight, not just under the clinic lights.
- Compare it with the whites of your eyes. Teeth much brighter than the eye whites tend to look artificial.
- Think about your age. Natural teeth darken slightly with time, and a very bright shade on an older face can be more noticeable.
- Consider the teeth that will not be treated. If some lower or back teeth are staying natural, the new teeth need to sit comfortably next to them. Whitening the natural teeth first can help.
Whitening does not change the colour of veneers or crowns, as the NHS and the Oral Health Foundation both point out. If you plan to whiten untreated teeth, do it before the veneers or crowns are made so the shades can be matched.
Shape and length
Tooth shape affects the character of a smile. Square, flat edges look bold and strong. Softer, slightly rounded corners look gentler. Longer central incisors look youthful, because front teeth wear and shorten with age. Too long, though, and they show when your lips are at rest in a way that can look odd.
Symmetry and variation
Perfect symmetry is part of the Hollywood look. Real smiles are slightly asymmetrical, and a small amount of variation between teeth is one of the things that makes a smile look natural. You can choose where on that scale you want to be.
How many teeth
The number of teeth treated depends on how wide your smile is. If too few teeth are treated, the change in colour stops abruptly at the corners of the smile. We check this from photos of you smiling naturally.
| Feature | Hollywood style | Natural style |
|---|---|---|
| Shade | Very white, often the brightest shades | Lighter than now, matched to skin and eyes |
| Edges | Even, opaque | Slightly translucent, gently varied |
| Shape | Uniform, often squarer | Individual, following your face |
| Symmetry | Mirror image | Balanced but not identical |
| Surface | High gloss | Polished with subtle texture |
How to avoid an over-white result
The best protection against regret is to see the new smile before it is made permanent. For cosmetic cases we use digital smile design to plan the shape and proportions on photos of your face, and then make a trial smile (mock-up). The mock-up is a temporary resin version of the planned teeth placed over your own teeth. You can look at it in a mirror, in daylight, take photos, show your partner, and speak with it in place.
- Send photos A relaxed smile, a big smile, and a close-up of your teeth. Tell us what you like and dislike, and bring photos of smiles you admire, whether Hollywood or natural.
- Digital smile design The dentist plans length, shape and proportions on your photos.
- Trial smile In Antalya, the mock-up lets you see and feel the design before any final work. Changes are easy at this stage.
- Shade choice You choose the shade with the dentist, in good light, with your face in view.
- Final restorations Only then are the veneers or crowns made and fitted.
If you are unsure, it is usually wiser to choose a shade one step less bright. A slightly natural smile rarely disappoints anyone. An over-white one is hard to undo.
Veneers, crowns, or whitening?
Whether you lean Hollywood or natural, the underlying treatment depends on your teeth.
- Teeth whitening may be all you need if your teeth are a good shape and you mainly want them lighter. See our teeth whitening page. We give a written price after seeing your photos.
- Laminate veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the teeth, used when shape, small gaps or colour need changing. Our E-max laminate veneers are £300 per tooth. The Oral Health Foundation notes that some enamel usually needs to be removed for veneers, so this is a permanent decision.
- Crowns cover the whole tooth and are used when teeth are heavily filled, broken or root-treated. Zirconia crowns are £150 and E-max crowns £225 per tooth.
- Composite bonding can reshape a few teeth without removing enamel, at £125 per tooth, though it is less stain-resistant than porcelain.
We prefer to save a healthy tooth rather than crown it, and we will tell you if a less invasive option would give you the result you want. Our smile makeover page explains how these are combined.
Practical points before you decide
- A smile makeover usually takes one trip of about five to seven days.
- Gum health comes first. Inflamed gums need treatment before veneers or crowns are made.
- If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects the new smile, and not wearing one can reduce the guarantee.
- Our written guarantee covers smile makeovers for five years and laminate veneers for three years. See our guarantee page for the conditions.

Common questions
What is a Hollywood smile?
It is a popular name for a smile makeover with very white, even and symmetrical teeth, usually made with veneers or crowns on the upper and often lower teeth that show when you smile.
Can I choose a natural shade instead of bright white?
Yes. You choose the shade with the dentist, and many patients choose a shade lighter than their current teeth but not the brightest available. A trial smile helps you see it before it is final.
How many teeth are done in a smile makeover?
Usually the teeth that show when you smile, which for many people is 8 to 10 upper teeth and often a similar number of lower teeth. It depends on how wide your smile is, which we check from photos.
Can I whiten my teeth instead?
If your teeth are a good shape and you mainly want them lighter, whitening may be enough. Veneers or crowns are used when shape, length, gaps or old fillings also need correcting.
What guarantee comes with a smile makeover?
Our written guarantee covers a smile makeover for 5 years and laminate veneers for 3 years, with conditions about hygiene, check-ups and wearing a night guard if you grind. See our guarantee page.
