Dentures in Turkey: from loose plates to implant-held dentures

If your denture rocks, rubs or needs glue, a few implants can anchor it. And sometimes a well-made ordinary denture is still the right answer.

Short answer

Dentures in Turkey at Precious Dental are mostly implant-retained overdentures: a removable denture that clips onto two or more implants, at £300 per implant plus the denture, which we price in writing after seeing your X-ray. Because the implants need to heal, this takes two trips to Antalya. A conventional denture without implants can still suit some people, and we quote that in writing too.

Dentures in Turkey are not usually what people fly out for. Most of the UK patients who ask us about dentures already have one, and the problem is that it moves. It lifts when they laugh, traps seeds, needs fixative every morning, or makes them avoid certain foods. At Precious Dental in Antalya our usual answer is an implant-retained denture, also called an overdenture, which clips onto a few implants so it stays put. This page explains how that works, who it suits, and the cases where an ordinary denture is still the honest recommendation.

Why dentures get looser over time

When teeth are lost, the bone that held them slowly shrinks, because it no longer has roots to support. A denture rests on the gum over that bone. As the ridge flattens, there is less for the denture to grip, and the lower denture in particular can become very hard to keep steady, since the tongue and cheeks push it around.

Relining or making a new denture helps for a while. The NHS notes that dentures can become loose over time and need adjusting when they do. But no denture can stop the bone shrinking, and that is where implants come in.

What an implant-retained denture is

An overdenture looks much like a normal denture. Underneath, it has small fittings that clip onto attachments on top of two or more implants in the jaw. You still take it out each night to clean it and the gums, but during the day it does not float or tip.

There are two main ways to attach it:

  • Individual attachments, often called studs or locators, one on each implant. Simple to clean, and the clips inside the denture are cheap to change when they wear.
  • A bar joining the implants, which the denture clips over. A bar spreads load and can give firmer retention, especially in the upper jaw.

For the lower jaw, international consensus statements from McGill and York have described a denture held by two implants as a sensible first-choice standard for people with no lower teeth, because it improves comfort and chewing so much compared with a conventional lower denture.

Who an overdenture suits

  • you already wear a full denture and it is loose, especially the lower one
  • you are happy to take your teeth out to clean them, but want them firm while in
  • bone or budget does not allow a fixed full-arch bridge
  • you have trouble with hand dexterity and want something easier to clean than a fixed bridge, or you are planning for later life

An overdenture is not the same as fixed teeth. If you want teeth that never come out, read All-on-4 and All-on-6. All-on-4® is a trademark of Nobel Biocare; we are not affiliated with any implant maker.

When a conventional denture still fits

Implants are surgery, and they are not right for everybody. A normal denture can still be the better choice if:

  • your general health makes even minor surgery unwise, or you take medicines that affect bone healing
  • you have an upper denture that is already stable, which is common, since the palate gives suction
  • you want to avoid two trips and a healing period
  • you are replacing only a few teeth and a partial denture is simpler than implants or a bridge

We will say so if that is our view. We give a written price for dentures after seeing your X-ray or photos, because the work varies so much.

How an overdenture is made with us

  1. From home Send photos, a panoramic X-ray if you have one, and your medical history. A dentist prepares a preliminary written plan and itemised price. You pay nothing to receive it.
  2. Day one in Antalya Examination and a 3D CBCT scan of your jaws. The dentist confirms how many implants, which brand and why, in writing.
  3. Implant placement The implants are placed under local anaesthetic, with sedation by an anaesthetist if you asked for it. Any remaining failing teeth are removed free of charge. The dentist explains how and when you can wear your denture while the implants heal.
  4. Healing at home About 3 months in the lower jaw and 4 to 6 months in the upper, while the implants bond with bone.
  5. Second trip The attachments or bar are fitted and the denture is made or converted to clip onto them. You learn how to put it in, take it out and clean it, and you leave with written aftercare, an implant passport and copies of your scans.

The first stay includes 4 hotel nights and the second 5, with transfers included. Read how it works for booking details.

Living with an overdenture

The first time it clicks into place is usually the moment people notice the difference. You can bite into food with more confidence and talk without worrying about movement. Clean the denture daily, brush around the attachments gently, and take it out at night so the gums can rest. The small nylon clips inside the denture wear and need changing from time to time, which is a quick job. The denture itself will need relining or replacing after some years.

Risks and honest limits

  • Implant surgery risks: swelling, infection, an implant failing to bond, and rarely nerve irritation in the lower jaw.
  • Maintenance: clips wear, dentures crack, and adjustments are needed over time. Budget for upkeep.
  • Sore spots can still happen where the denture rests on gum.
  • It still comes out. Some people find that harder emotionally than they expected. If that matters to you, discuss fixed options.
  • Infection around implants is the long-term risk if the attachments are not kept clean.

Common questions

How many implants does an overdenture need?

Often two in the lower jaw. The upper jaw usually needs more, because the bone is softer and the denture is larger. The dentist decides on your 3D scan and explains why in your written plan.

Can my existing denture be clipped onto implants?

Sometimes, if it fits well and is in good condition. Often a new denture is better. The dentist will look at it on day one.

What is the difference between an overdenture and All-on-4?

An overdenture comes out for cleaning and is held by clips. A full-arch bridge such as All-on-4 is screwed in and only a dentist removes it. See All-on-4.

Do you make ordinary dentures?

We can, and for some people a well-made conventional denture is the sensible choice. We give a written price after seeing your X-ray or photos.

Is the denture guaranteed?

The implants and abutments carry our lifetime guarantee. Ask us for the written terms that apply to the denture itself in your plan. See guarantee.
